Red Fairy
English (en) svenska (sv)
Red Fairy is an online store that sells clothes from brands only with a higher ethical consciousness. The store has been around since 2008 and during the first year Red Fairy also had a store on Folkskolegatan, Södermalm in Stockholm but since October 2009 it is only an online shop. (1) Those who manage the store are Samira Ariadad and Vidar Egner (who also lectures at (Rättviseakademin) Fair Academy and the (Rena Kläder) Clean Clothes Campaign). (2)
The store has set rules they follow when they decide whether a brand is sufficiently ethical and these rules can be summarized as follows;
Companies transparency is measured in matters as if you can find out where all the goods originally come from, if there are written policies, if the company responds to all questions and provides insight on how the company is owned, the income and bonuses distributed and so on. What social responsibility does the company have? Do they help build the communities they operate through; do they build roads or other infrastructure investments? Do they see to social injustice? Right to organize is reviewed; have all the workers in the production ranks the right to join unions? And do the workers have the opportunity to influence decisions that affect them at staff meetings, is there room for complaints and does the management share meeting protocols? Will the workers receive survival wages or minimum wages? Are there any forced or child labor and is overtime is paid or voluntary? Are wages subject to discrimination?
The work is reviewed in terms of security and various chores. Is there proof of employment, further training and insurance for accidents and illness?
Even the ecological awareness is important. The cotton should be organic and branded with Fair Trade. They try to make sure that accessories such as buttons are made in factories with acceptable working conditions. (3) Example of brands that Red Fairy sells is Righteous Fashion and Kuyichi. (4)
