The bioaccumulation refers to a substance’s tendency to be stored in aquatic organisms, such as fish. Generally, the bioaccumulation of a substance increases the more fat-soluble the substance is. PCBs and DDT are examples of substances that are bioackumulative. These substances are also highly persistent, so they are stored in the environment, particularly in fatty fish such as herring and salmon.
