The standard also addresses working conditions, social conditions, discrimination and child labor. Certification is an assessment of a textile company's environmental performance. That is to say that the company applying for certification according to Öko-Tex Standard 1000 report emissions to air, land and water but also energy and water consumption. Also, if any chemicals or dyes have been used. The standard prohibits certain technologies that are environmentally damaging and harmful to employees who work with production. The company who are applying for Öko-tex 1000 for must also have [[an environmental management system]] according to [[ISO 14000]] or [[EMAS]].

The advantage of the Öko-Tex Standard 1000 in comparison with ISO 14001 and EMAS is that Standard 1000 have more detailed requirements and these are the same no matter which country or continent the production is located. Certification is valid for a production site. Another advantage is that it is possible to label the finished product with Öko-tex 1000.
