Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a standard introduced in 2006 with the objective to harmonize the environmental standards that globally exist for textiles. It includes requirements for ecological raw materials and manufacturing processes. GOTS has two standards / labels.

Purpose

The purpose of GOTS is to offer and ensure the average customer ecological textiles. For manufacturers, the purpose is that there should be a certification that is accepted in the major markets.

Criteria

Some of the criteria for production of fiber

• The two labeling systems require at least 95% or 70% certified organic fibers

• Certification is based on recognized national and international standards such as EEC 2092/91 and USDA NOP

Some of the criteria for processing is

• The organic fibers always have to be separated (by the entire production process) from conventional fibers

• All chemicals used must be processed and meet basic requirements on toxicity and degradability

• The social criteria should be based on the ILO standards

Control system for the quality of GOTS is on-site investigation and waste / residual control.

Certification of the production chain

• All producers in the production chain is undergoing an annual inspection cycle

Waste control

• Companies that wants to be licensed with GOTS must undergo waste control in accordance with a risk assessment regarding pollution.

• Sampling of reviewers and analysis of ISO accredited laboratories

Markings

There are two markings • Organic or certified organic with other fibers in which at least 95% of the fibers must be organic.

• Made with a certain percentage of organic fibers in which at least 70% of the fibers must be organic. Of the other 30%, 10% is maximum allowance for synthetic.
